Frequently Asked Questions
How long should my hair be to get dreadlocks from my own hair?
At least 15 cm (approximately shoulder length). Is your hair shorter, or do you prefer more length? Dreadlocks can also be extended with braided extensions —so there's always a suitable option.
Does getting dreadlocks hurt?
It's especially sensitive because your scalp is under strain for extended periods. The extent of this varies from person to person, but generally it's manageable—with the occasional sensitive spot.
How many dreads can fit on a head?
Average 30–90 , depending on hair thickness, hair root, desired thickness and hair type.
How much shorter will my hair get?
With the crochet hook method, your hair will be about ⅓ to ¼ shorter .
Can I brush out dreadlocks?
Yes, that's possible! Keep in mind it will take a lot of time and may cause thin ends afterward.
How do I care for my dreadlocks?
Dreadlocks made from your own hair should be washed about once a week with a shampoo suitable for dreadlocks. Rinsing thoroughly and letting them dry completely is essential.
