Dreadlocks from your own hair
Frequently Asked Questions - Dreadlocks from your own hair
How long should my hair be at least?
If your hair is at least 15cm long, about shoulder length, then you have a good length to make dreadlocks from your own hair.
What is the minimum hair length for dreadlocks with extensions?
In this case, too, I recommend at least 15cm for the best result. However, if there are some short strands (at least 10cm, for example, from bangs), this is fine.
How many dreadlocks can fit on a head?
30 - 90 depending on the size of the head, the amount of hair implanted per cm2, the desired thickness of the dreadlocks and the hair type.
How do I prepare my hair for real dreads?
Stop using conditioner for at least two weeks before your appointment. Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove buildup (especially silicone). Then start using a dreadlock-friendly shampoo. Wash your hair again two days before your appointment.
Does getting dreadlocks hurt?
Since dreadlocks put strain on your scalp for a long time (hours), it's definitely a sensitive experience. Whether you experience pain depends greatly on how sensitive your scalp is, how long you're sitting, and your pain threshold. Generally, it's quite manageable, but you'll definitely have a few spots that are painful.
Can I color my dreadlocks with henna or chemical dye?
That's certainly possible. With both henna and chemical dyes. However, chemical dyeing is never without damage. If you do it regularly, it can even hinder the maturing process. Henna, on the other hand, is kinder to your hair because it sits "on your hair" rather than "in your hair." With henna, be extra careful to rinse it out thoroughly.
How often should dreadlocks be updated?
This depends somewhat on how "tight" you want to keep them, how your hair reacts to it, how much you do yourself (palm rolling, back-combing loose hairs, root separation), and how far along your dreadlocks are in the maturing process. For the tightest result, it's not a bad idea to come in every three months for a proper maintenance checkup during the first year. If you want them to be more natural, every six months during that first year is also sufficient. Once you're on your dreadlock journey, you'll often figure out what you want.
Are dreadlocks heavy?
It's quite a difference compared to loose hair. You won't notice this immediately after the procedure, but you will notice it after a few months, especially when your hair is wet ;)
How much shorter will your hair be if you get dreadlocks?
In the case of the crochet hook method I use: 1/3 to 1/4 shorter.
Can I swim or go to the sauna with dreadlocks?
That's definitely possible. The sea, pool, saltwater pool, or sauna are all no problem. The most important thing is that your hair is dry before you go to bed.
Can you brush out dreadlocks or do you have to cut them off?
Yes, brushing them out is definitely possible! It's quite a job, though, and takes at least as long as setting them. Depending on how long you've had your dreadlocks, it's wise to be mindful of thin ends that could benefit from a trim later.
How often should I wash my dreadlocks?
First of all, this is a personal preference. I recommend a maximum of once a week, depending on your scalp's needs. Most importantly, use a dreadlock-friendly shampoo that's suitable for your scalp.
Can I get dreadlocks if my hair is very thin?
Yes :) Dreadlocks can even be a very nice option for you if you have thin hair. A dreadlock gets its volume partly because the hairs you normally shed daily stay in place. In this case, definitely desirable. Sometimes, if you have very thin hair and also have a small plant per square centimeter, it can be a nice option to braid dreadlock extensions as filler alongside your own dreadlocks for extra volume and less visible scalp ;)
Which shampoo is best for my dreadlocks?
A dreadlock-friendly shampoo. This means a shampoo that leaves no residue, so no silicones or (natural) oils, and is also gentle on your scalp. Well-known dreadlock shampoos include Dollylocks or RawRoots. I've also heard good things about Urtekram, Petal Fresh, and Wella Elements.
Can I sleep normally with my dreadlocks?
For both natural and braided dreadlocks, it's a good idea to purchase a satin pillowcase or bonnet. This also applies to "regular" loose hair. Satin is very effective against frizz and maintains moisture balance (including your skin's, so it's a win-win). Just make sure it's genuine satin or bamboo satin, not polyester.
I'm not sure if real dreads are the best choice for me, can you advise me?
No problem :) During a dream hair consultation, I'll spend about half an hour with you to discuss your questions and options. This can be done in my studio in Zwolle, by phone, or via Zoom.
Braiding Dreadlocks
Frequently Asked Questions - Braiding Dreadlocks
How long does my hair have to be to get dreadlocks braided?
Ideally, I work with at least 10 centimeters. Longer is always fine. The minimum length is necessary to ensure the braid is long enough to securely fasten the dreadlock. If your hair is 10 cm long but you have shorter strands here and there, there's a chance they'll slip out. So, this is at your own risk.
How many dreadlocks do I need?
The exact number depends on your head size, the amount of hair per square centimeter, the desired thickness of your dreadlocks, and your hair type. To give you an idea: a full head usually requires a set of 50-60 dreadlocks, and a partial (depending on the number of rows) often requires 12-21. If you want more volume, you can choose (more) double-ended dreadlocks in your set.
How do I prepare my hair for dreadlock braiding?
Stop using conditioner for at least two weeks before your appointment. Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove buildup (especially silicone). Then start using a dreadlock-friendly shampoo. Wash your hair again two days before your appointment.
How long can braided dreadlocks last?
2-3 months. When you apply the dreadlock, it sits quite tightly against your scalp. As your hair grows, the dreadlock will eventually settle further down. You'll see regrowth ;) Depending on how quickly your hair grows, between 2 and 3 months is often a good time to rebraid it (if you wish).
Can I remove the dreadlocks myself?
Yes, you can do that yourself quite easily. With small scissors or, even better, a torn knife, you can simply pull the elastic/string through. Then, unwind the braid from the dreadlock. If you have a tail comb, it's definitely handy for this job. It might take a bit of plucking here and there because the hair you normally shed daily is stuck to the dreadlock extension.
Can I swim or go to the sauna with braided dreadlocks?
That's definitely possible. The sea, pool, saltwater pool, or sauna are all no problem. The most important thing is that your hair is dry before you go to bed.
Can I braid dreadlocks if my hair is very thin?
Yes :) This can actually create a lot of volume. You might need to use a little less because of your thinner hair and the location of your hair. In that case, choose a set with mostly double-ended dreadlocks. Note: If your hair is very thin or fragile due to illness or medication, please contact us to discuss the possibilities.
Can I sleep normally with my braided dreadlocks?
For both natural and braided dreadlocks, it's a good idea to purchase a satin pillowcase or bonnet. This also applies to "regular" loose hair. Satin is very effective against frizz and maintains moisture balance (including your skin's, so it's a win-win). Just make sure it's genuine satin or bamboo satin, not polyester.
How often should I wash my hair?
It's best to wash your braided dreadlocks no more than once a week. This helps to minimize sagging and frizz.
Which shampoo is best for my braided dreadlocks?
The best option is a dreadlock-friendly shampoo. This means a shampoo that leaves no residue, so no silicones or (natural) oils, and is also gentle on your scalp. Popular dreadlock shampoos include Dollylocks or RawRoots. I've also heard good things about Urtekram, Petal Fresh, and Wella Elements. Besides shampoo, it can also be nice to use a refreshing spray. But this is more of a personal preference, not an absolute necessity ;)
I'm not sure if braiding dreadlocks is the right choice for me. Can you give me some advice?
No problem :) During a dream hair consultation, I'll spend about half an hour with you to discuss your questions and options. This can be done in my studio in Zwolle, by phone, or via Zoom.
