How do I prepare for the appointment?

Wash your hair about two days before your appointment and bring something to eat for yourself, especially for longer treatments.

Getting new dreadlocks? Check if your shampoo is dreadlock-friendly (silicone-free and residue-free). If you're currently using a shampoo that's not suitable, start switching now—every scalp is different, so there's no one-size-fits-all recommendation.

Shampoos that often work well include:
• Petal Fresh Rosemary & Mint
• Urtekram Tea Tree
• Raw Roots Greenie Genie shampoo bar (available in the studio)
• Wella Elements Renewing Shampoo

Applying or braiding dreadlocks

What is the difference between braiding and setting dreadlocks?

Braiding dreadlocks involves attaching a single dreadlock from a set (synthetic or human hair) by braiding your own loose hair around it. Your hair isn't permanently altered, and the set can easily be removed later. This is a great option if you want to see how dreadlocks look on you, or if you're still unsure about a permanent option.

When applying dreadlocks to your own hair, the dreadlocks are made entirely from your own hair (possibly with synthetic or human hair extensions). The hair is sectioned, teased, and formed into permanent dreadlocks with a crochet hook. This is ideal for those who consciously choose a long-term, custom-made process.

How long should my hair be before getting dreads?

To create dreadlocks from your own hair, you need at least 15 cm of hair. Backcombing shortens the hair by about ⅓ to ½ , meaning the final dread will be considerably shorter than your current length. With less length, the dreads quickly become very small—hence this guideline.

This length also provides space to attach extension hair for extra length, if desired .

For braiding dreadlocks, 10 cm is sufficient. Your own hair is braided around a separate dread from a set, so less length is needed to secure it properly and securely. I prefer not to work with less than 10 cm to ensure stability.

Choosing dreads means choosing yourself and standing in your power. When you're ready, I'll welcome you to the studio with love.
