Over time, dreadlocks can accumulate residue from natural oils, shampoo, dust, or external dirt. Because locs are compact, this doesn't always wash out on its own.
A deep cleanse (also called a dreadlock detox) helps to thoroughly cleanse your dreadlocks and make them feel airy and fresh again.
You can use a ready-made detox for this, or you can try it yourself. Below, I share a safe and proven DIY recipe for a dreadlock deep cleanse.
What do you need?
- 45 grams of baking soda 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (ACV)
- 10 drops of essential oil (e.g. tea tree and/or rosemary – optional)
- Hot water
- A tub, sink or (ideally) an inflatable detox bath
Step 1 – Baking soda soak
Fill your bath or basin with warm water and dissolve the baking soda completely in it.
Submerge your dreadlocks and let them soak for about 5 minutes .
Then gently squeeze out your locs.
It's normal if your hair feels a little dry or slightly clumped together now — this will correct itself in the next step.
Step 2 – ACV rinse
Empty the bath and refill it with clean, warm water.
Add the apple cider vinegar and, if desired, the essential oil .
Submerge your dreadlocks again and let this mixture sit for about 10 minutes .
Gently massage your scalp and squeeze your locs occasionally.
Do you notice the water turning cloudy or brown?
Then the detox is working — which is exactly what you want.
Step 3 – Rinse & dry
Squeeze your locks well and then rinse them thoroughly in the shower until all residue is gone. Carefully separate your locks at the roots, palm roll if desired, and start the drying process. Make sure your dreadlocks are completely dry before going to bed.
How often?
Do a deep cleanse preferably 2x per year , and a maximum of 4x per year .
Don't start this until your dreadlocks are past the baby stage (at least into the "teenage" stage).
